The Cottonwood Bandshell and Plaza form the heart of Cottonwood Park, home to the Izushi Friendship Society Japanese gardens, the Farmers’ Market, Cottonwood falls and the historical generating station. The Market Stage was commissioned by the City to replace the original much-loved farmers’ market facility. The park is a hidden gem in the City of Nelson, offering a moment of respite from the energetic mountain town.
The structural system is a combination of steel and Mass Timber Panels. The steel structure allows for a free span roof profile reminiscent of mountain peaks. The Mass Timber Panels eliminate the needs for shear bracing and the combined systems result in a visually dynamic form.
The angles of the roof and walls project sound out into the plaza and reduce reverb for the performers. With the newly built addition of a washroom building and the addition of shade canopies across the Plaza, the park is nearing completion as a sophisticated public amenity for the community.
