Known locally as the 1896 Building, this 128 year old edifice has been many things throughout its history including a bakery, a thrift shop and housing.
The owner has gutted the building internally. Stand Architecture has worked with the client to create a new commercial space in the main streetfront space, and three residential suites in the rest of the building.
The original structural brick envelope has been largely preserved, with a few minor changes to doors and window locations. To improve energy performance, an insulated stud frame wall has been added to the inside of the brick, the old windows replaced with new windows, and the HVAC system has been upgraded to include heat pumps and ERV air exchange units.
Using historical photos for reference, the Street Facade has been renovated to substantially reflect historical materials and detailing.
These efforts have extended the life of this building for another 128 years, and provided housing and leasable commercial space in the walkable downtown core of historic Kaslo.
